Ah, St Lucia! A paradise of juxtapose proportions. On one side of the island is Castries, the capital city and home to many of the all-inclusive resorts. In my opinion, these over rated resorts are nice in some circumstances, a worry-free holiday for example, but they do leave much to be desired. Like seclusion, for example, which can only be achieved by staying in smaller guest houses or in villas. So, on the other side of the island (sort of) is Stonefield Estates, a place where I felt at home. The Pitons were literally right out my front door. The adjacent Mango Tree Restaurant offers phenomenal food and phenomenal views during mealtime and they’re open until 10pm. Everything is so fresh here!
The history of the island is as unique as its people. Study up a bit and you will soon learn that their Creole language reflects St Lucian society. The most recent change in their country is that banana farms that have taken over the sugar cane fields of old. Recent of course being in the last 100 years. Driving from Mamiku to Castries allowed me to see the interfacing of the past and present on this little island. The ancient rainforests butt right up against those banana fields. I can imagine some random lost little fella (monkey) falling from a tree onto my jeep. Also, the best (in my opinion) snorkeling is at a beach close to Cap Estate because the beach is secluded.
So, after a much needed de-stress holiday, I still couldn’t seem to escape my thrill in designing. I sat on the volcanic beach (close to Cap Estate), pen in hand, and used my relaxed brain to create the Monkey tote. The not-so-funny thing is, there are no monkeys on St Lucia. But there is a drive-through rainforest. ...and lots of banana trees.
